Student Awareness Week UCTSWA (UCT Student/Worker Alliance) is a new body aimed at mobilizing students to use their power to support the demands made by UCT workers at their forum. They have planned a series of events to raise consciousness of the treatment of outsourced UCT workers, to promote worker-student dialogue and to introduce themselves to students. The events are: · Roger Ronnie Talk: To be held in Kramer 2 at 1:00 on Thursday 18 September Roger Ronnie, of SAMWU (South African Municipal Workers Union) and chairman of the board of ILRIG (International Labour Research and Information Board) will be speaking on the legalities of outsourcing and what recourse there is for workers to access their rights. · Story of Outsourcing: To be held in LS2A at 1:00 on Monday 22 September Simon Eppel, who was one of the UCT students instrumental to take action, whose campaign resulted in UCT’s adoption of a code of conduct binding the employers of outsourced workers, will share his experiences and the insights he gained. A short documentary on outsourcing will be shown. Following this, two UCT workers will talk about their experiences of being outsourced. · Student-Worker Discussion/Think Tank To be held in Arts 202 at 1:00 on Tuesday 23 September This will provide an opportunity for UCT workers and students to reflect on the implications of the week’s presentations and discuss the way forward.
